The city of Yazd, called “Jewel of the Desert,” is situated in the center of Iran. It is known for its historical wind towers, which count among the global cultural heritage yet are hardly known within the Western world. In 2005, the association X-CHANGE culture science invited seventeen well-known photographers from Iran and six European countries to spend a week in Yazd to explore the city, soaking up their own impressions and capturing them in their work. This publication is the result of these explorations and offers a comprehensive view of the city of Yazdfeaturing the compiled artwork of these outstanding artists. Some of the artists chose to focus on historical architecture, others on modern consumption in stores and at markets, and yet others on the city’s residents. Taken together, these works created a picture of a place that is both timeless and contemporary. With contributions by Anita Andrzejewska, Sabine Bitter, Abdolali Hadadian, Edgar Honetschlager, Kourosh Javidi Parsijani, Walter Joebstl, Iosif Kiraly, Ayk Kokcu, Paul Albert Leitner, Ghasem Meamari, Maryam Mohammadi, Walter Niedermayr, Klemens Ortmeyer, Shahrbanoo Sabet Sarvestani, Sara Sasani, Rupert Steiner, Helmut Weber, Babak Zirak.
