ORF Wayfinding and Information System

Further development of the historic wayfinding system designed by Roland Rainer

Roland Rainer’s 1975 wayfinding system served as the basis for the redesign and was studied in depth. Its design principles and characteristic elements were carefully developed further and adapted to the current requirements of the ORF Centre. The aim was to improve orientation within the building without significantly altering the protected historic structure. For this reason, custom mounting solutions for the information carriers were also developed that avoid drilling and intervention in the building’s fabric wherever possible.

The characteristic basic elements of the original – the reduced formal language, materiality and colour palette – were taken up and, in a revised modular arrangement of the information carriers, complemented by a new series of pictograms along with murals and adhesive graphics. The system is designed to be independent of the ORF’s changing corporate appearance and can be adapted to the varied spatial situations of the media campus. It combines the demands of orientation and event-related information with the continuation of the spatial identity of the protected historic ensemble.
