POP 1900–2000

popular music in Styria

Who were the Styrian “Popstars” of the early 20th century? What was the connection between the Comedian Harmonists and Styria? Which music group from Gradenberg once even outclassed Elvis Presley in the Austria hit parade? And: What was the Styrian response to Woodstock?

POP 1900–2000 is focused on the theme of popular music in Styria during the 20th century. Spotlighted here are Styrian protagonists and bands, their music and the location where they performed and were heard, their lifestyles and lifeworlds, illuminated in the interplay and context of (Styrian) contemporary history, media history, and everyday culture. The exhibition thus provides insight into musical activity in Styria in the sphere of entertainment music. It builds bridges between cultural and societal developments, centers on less-known or even forgotten material, and touches on a whole ensemble of music genres that often elude clear definition.

All of this is narrated through a multitude of photographs, film and video recordings, through technical devices and media-historical artifacts, through the music itself, and with the support of the people who “made” the music.
